Q & A: Expand Your ADA Knowledge

A part time college instructor with Asperger’s syndrome was experiencing auditory discrimination difficulties that prevented her from making immediate decisions and meeting deadlines for projects and caused problems for her during meetings and annual evaluations. What is her employer’s obligation under the ADA to provide reasonable accommodations?

  • The following accommodations would be reasonable under the ADA: the employer could permit the employee to take notes during staff meetings and provide written responses to all attendees on questions raised during meetings. The employer could also provide a written copy of annual evaluations and project expectation in advance of face-to-face meetings.
